We have previously discussed the subtle footprints of consciousness on matter: a thought can raise an arm, a belief can create a placebo effect. But is that the limit of the power of consciousness? Or are these just ripples on the surface of an ocean of energy we have yet to know?
In the 1960s, a CIA polygraph expert named Cleve Backster, in a moment of whimsy, connected the electrodes of his machine to a plant leaf. He was astonished to discover that at the very moment he merely thought about burning the leaf, the polygraph needle jumped frantically. The plant seemed to have “read” his intention.
Backster’s experiment opened a small door, revealing that consciousness can affect the material world from a distance, without any physical contact. But it was still a subtle effect, only recordable by a machine. The bigger question arises: What would happen if a consciousness were trained, focused, and powerful to an extraordinary degree? Could it produce effects not just measurable by machines, but visible to the naked eye? Could it actually “bend” the laws of physics that we consider immutable?
This is the realm of “supernormal abilities”—a term for extraordinary human capabilities. Though often dismissed as fantasy or fraud, there have been periods in history when these phenomena were studied seriously, revealing latent human potentials that modern science has yet to explain.
1. The “Qigong Fever” and the Shocking Experiments
In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, a massive movement erupted in China, known as the “qigong fever.” Tens of millions of people, from ordinary citizens to high-ranking officials, practiced traditional qigong disciplines with the belief that they could heal illnesses and unlock the body’s extraordinary potential.
Along with this fever, a flood of reports emerged about people possessing “supernormal abilities” (特异功能, tèyì gōngnéng). Instead of dismissing them as superstitious tales, a segment of the scientific community and government agencies in China at the time decided to conduct serious research.
They invited individuals with these abilities, especially many children, into strictly controlled laboratories at prestigious universities and research institutes. Under the supervision of scientists, incredible experiments were conducted and documented:
- Reading Words in Sealed Envelopes: A person could “see” and accurately read words written on a piece of paper that had been sealed within multiple layers of envelopes.
- Moving Objects from a Distance (Psychokinesis): Some individuals could use their minds to move small objects, or even make the hands of a watch turn inside a sealed glass case.
- Sprouting Seeds: One of the most famous experiments involved a qigong master using their mind to cause a seed (like a bean) to sprout and grow several centimeters in just a few minutes, a process that normally takes days in nature.
These results, published in Chinese scientific journals, sparked a fierce debate. Although the movement was later suppressed for political reasons and many cases were exposed as fraudulent, it is undeniable that there was a period when these phenomena were taken seriously, leaving behind documents suggesting that, under certain conditions, human consciousness is capable of transcending ordinary limits.
2. Macro-Scale Effects: Transcending Physical Space
The abilities studied in laboratories were often on a small scale. But in ancient scriptures and oral traditions, abilities of a much grander, macroscopic level are described, directly challenging fundamental laws like gravity and the solidity of matter.
- Moving Objects (Telekinesis): The ability to use the mind to move larger objects. In many legends, Taoist masters or monks could lift boulders or make objects levitate.
- Passing Through Walls: The ability to alter the molecular structure of one’s body and an obstacle to pass through each other. In theory, atoms are mostly empty space. If one could control the force fields that hold atoms together, passing through a wall would not be inconceivable.
- Levitation: The ability to use consciousness to overcome gravity and rise from the ground. This phenomenon has been recorded in many cultures, from Catholic saints to Tibetan monks.
These abilities, if real, all point to one thing: at a higher level of consciousness, consciousness is no longer a product of matter, but the master of matter. It can command molecules, atoms, and even the fundamental force fields of the universe.
3. Subatomic Effects: The Alchemy of Consciousness
If moving molecules is already extraordinary, then changing the internal structure of an atom is on an unimaginable level. This may be the key to deciphering one of history’s greatest mysteries: alchemy.
History often portrays alchemists as charlatans or early chemists, trying to turn lead into gold through crude chemical methods. But if we re-examine this from a different lens, a new possibility opens up.
What is the fundamental difference between a lead atom and a gold atom? It lies in the number of protons in the nucleus. A lead atom has 82 protons. A gold atom has 79 protons. In theory, if you could remove 3 protons from the nucleus of a lead atom, it would become a gold atom.
Modern science can do this in particle accelerators, but it requires an immense amount of energy.
Could it be that true alchemy was not a chemical process, but a supernormal ability at the subatomic level? Could a master alchemist, someone who had cultivated their consciousness to an extremely high level, use their mind to directly influence the atomic nucleus, commanding it to change its number of protons?
From this perspective, alchemy was not a failed material science, but perhaps the pinnacle of a science of consciousness that we have completely forgotten.
4. Expanding Perception: Seeing Through Time
Besides affecting matter, some supernormal abilities involve transcending the limits of ordinary perception, especially the limits of space and time.
- Clairvoyance / Remote Viewing: The ability to “see” events, places, or people at a great distance without using physical senses.
- Retrocognition: The ability to access information and images of events that have occurred in the past.
- Precognition / Prophecy: The ability to perceive or see events that are likely to happen in the future.
These abilities suggest that, on some level, all information about the past, present, and future exists simultaneously, like all the scenes in a film reel that have already been printed. A person with supernormal abilities is like someone who can “fast-forward” or “rewind” that film at will, while the rest of us can only watch it sequentially.
5. Magic or Concealment?: Heavenly Secrets Cannot Be Lightly Revealed
A reasonable question arises: If these abilities are real, why are they not demonstrated publicly and accepted as a widespread fact? Why are truly capable individuals often so discreet, or even disguise their abilities as “magic tricks”?

The answer may lie in a profound principle of the universe, often expressed as “tian ji bu ke xie lu” (heavenly secrets cannot be lightly revealed).
The human world is designed as a “realm of delusion.” We are placed here to choose our own paths, to realize for ourselves what is good and what is evil, based on faith and the cultivation of our character, not on supernatural evidence laid out before our eyes.
If a person could fly through the sky or turn stones into gold openly, the order of this society would collapse. People would no longer work or cultivate themselves, but would just chase after and worship miracles. The “test” of human life would lose all meaning.
Therefore, truly capable individuals, especially those who follow a path of genuine spiritual cultivation, often understand this rule very well. They will not casually display their abilities. Sometimes, if they need to do something, they might conceal it under the guise of a “magic trick” or a “lucky coincidence,” so as not to disrupt the state of ordinary society.
The absence of public proof, therefore, may not be proof of non-existence. Sometimes, it is the very expression of a deep respect for the higher laws of the universe.
